Ninety-seven percent of primary-age children in India are enrolled in school. Yet in rural areas, just 70% attend school on any given day. This means that of 200 school days each year, the average student attends on just 140. Attendance ranges from a high of 91% in the southern state of Kerala to a low of just 56% in the northern states of Manipur and Uttar Pradesh.
